Greens launch Mayo by-election campaign

July 20, 2008 - 1:59PM

National Greens leader Bob Brown has launched the party's campaign for
the by-election to be held in the Adelaide Hills seat of Mayo vacated
last week by former foreign minister Alexander Downer.

Adelaide Hills resident and school services officer Lynton Vonow, who
was the Greens candidate for Mayo in the 2007 federal election, will
contest the by-election.

Mr Brown also launched a stinging attack on the Labor party for not
contesting the by-election and the Liberals for "dumping" it.

"We know from electoral experience here and elsewhere you can get
upsets in elections like this and the people of Mayo ... have got a
right to feel miffed by both the parties," he said.

"The Coalition for dumping them less than 12 months after an election
and Labor for dumping them by not giving them an alternative and here
come the Greens."

Mr Brown said the Greens hoped to improve on the 11 per cent of the
vote they received in the seat in the federal election but conceded
the task was not made easier by Labor's decision not to contest the
seat.

"Not standing probably does make it more difficult for the Greens - to
be honest about it - because we've got a preferential system," he
said.

"I think it shows great weakness from Labor to not be fielding a
candidate in this electorate."
