Recently, someone here in Victoria was rushing his wife to hospital. He avoided
a booze bus test in order to get her to the ED.

Later, he returned to discuss what happened with the police. He was subsequently
charged and lost his licence for two years when he went to court.

Apparently the magistrate said that he had no choice but to impose the mandatory
sentence.

Now, they seem to have no problems with mandatory sentencing for motoring
offences. What then, is wrong with it for real crimes, particularly crimes of
violence?
