This (pdf) document from the Home Office Nationality Instructions
explains how "legitimation" can confer British citizenship in these
circumstances:
http://www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk/documents/nisec2gensec/legitimacy?view=Binary
Most of the time, when an unmarried British father subsequently
marries the mother, the child gets British citizenship at that point.
However there are a few exceptions, notably where the child has been
"legitimated" by operation of law in the place of the father's
domicile before marriage.
The detail of this area of nationality law is not simple. |
