Re: my familiy needs a joint sponsor Posted on: Wed, 23 Apr 2008 14:11:21 GMT

Thank you, Mr. Travel. I'm aware the health insurance isn't requried, just
thought documentation of it already being in force for my husband couldn't
hurt the case (and given the number of Americans without health insurance...).
My assets were not enough (although they counted against me when I applied
for public assistance when I first came back to this country and before I
found a job, they don't count as assets for sponsorship).

As for sponsorship NOT being a formality, I'm trying to find stats to support
that. I work with a number of people who are immigrants and in all of our
experiences and all the people we've communicated with regarding immigration,
we've never heard of the government suing a sponsor or joint sponsor to
recover public funds that an immigrant received. An immigratin attorney
informed me that the sponsors (unless one is a spouse) are not responsible
for personal debt such as credit card or mortgage debt; the only thing
sponsors are "in danger" of being hit with is having to pay back the
goverment for public funds that were dispersed to their sponsee (the
immigrant) -- but again, I can't find any info to show if or when that's
happened...? thoughts on this?
