Re: my familiy needs a joint sponsor Posted on: Fri, 25 Apr 2008 01:27:23 GMT

The more important point that I was unwittingly trying to get at was how
often are immigrants even awarded pubic assistance. When I first got back to
the states last August, I was a mother with a 7-month old baby: that
qualified me for medical assistance, and WIC, and that's it. Fortunately for
me, I was able to live with my parents until I could find a good job to
support myself and my son, and ultimately my husband until we get him on his
feet here. My question was coming from that experience: if I can't qualify
for public funds (other than what all women and children qualify for), how
could my alien husband? But another forum has somewhat answered my question --
only 2 cases that the responder was aware of where a sponsee sued his/her
sponsor or joint sponsor.99.99% of the time, no money is going to be awarded
to the immigrant so there's rarely/never an opportunity to sue for support,
or to recover said funds if they were paid out. Yes, it is a writtne contract
(joint sponsoring) but it's based on an event (the immigrant getting public
funds) that rarely/never happens. The "risk" of sponsoring an immigrant seems
far less of a risk than driving 10 miles over the speed limit... I've posted
this question on 3 forums and only 2 cases of it happening seem to be known.
