It will take about 90 days for your EAD to arrive. Did you get a
notice yet for biometrics? If your TN visa expires and you do not yet
have an EAD, you must stop work. If your EAD arrives prior to the TN
visa expiring, you're good to go. You employer can file for an
extension if you want... it really shouldn't make a difference one way
or another.
Your lawyer is a bit mixed up. You are eligible to apply for work
based on both the TN visa and your AOS... so dual intent is
irrelevant.
