Just a little more on your original question
Under current rules, you can apply for citizenship after 3 years of
green card by marriage (marriage based) or after 5 years of having a
green card (by yourself). My wife has just passed her test under the
latter. My step daughter has just passer her test under the former.
Only significant difference in application for naturalization
(citizenship) was which supporting documents were provided.
Both applied right before the fees increased (as did a zillion others)
