You reported the accident to the police. It is now a matter of record.
Although I don't believe that the insurance company have access to poice
records, there are many circumstances in which the information can come out.
Also, if you have a future accident and the insurance company examine the
vehicle and the engineer notices the current damage even if it has been
repaired. They will want to know how it happened (and remember the engineer
is employed by the company to find excuses to reject the claim).
And you may also like to consider that if the insurance company do refuse to
cover you (failure to declare is seen as fraud by them), then you are
required to declare that as a material fact on any future insurance
application you make. Basically, if you have been refused insurance then
you will be refused insurance.
