"Informed consent" is a term originally used with regard to consent to
medical procedures. It has been used to allow quite young children
(e.g. 10-year-olds) to be involved in decisions about their medical
treatment.
The slogan used to allow homo.ual acts between males to be legalised
(in the late 1960s in the UK) was "consenting adults in private."
'Adult' originally meant 'over 21', but the lower limit has been
successively reduced to 18 and 16. The 'private' restriction has also
been relaxed to allow males to embrace and kiss (in a .ual manner)
in public in the same way, and to the same degree, that male/female
couples can.
Picking a catchy slogan is key to extending freedoms, together with
limiting the extent of the freedom until people get used to it. Once
it becomes established, 'equality' and 'anti-discrimination' can be
promoted. "Votes for women" originally allowed only to women over the
age of 30 to vote.
