No negotiation is necessary. The sign on the shelf displaying the price is
enough invitation.

Agreed, and how often do you do that?

The OP when he 'bought' the item, then entered into a contractual
obligation. Therefore he has little or no re-dress as he is now expecting to
change the contract. Any refund that may be issued, as I previously said,
would be goodwill.
