They did. There is a lot of work underway at present under the heading
CJSSS - Criminal Justice Simple Speedy Summary. There are various pilots
going on around the country of measures to try to speed up the process
and make the whole thing run more efficiently. But it is only as
efficient as the ability of the police and prosecution to get their
evidence together and served.
There are no clues in the story as to why it took five months, but that
is not unusual for a not guilty plea to get to trial in the Magistrates
Court.
