Imagine the following: You are a police officer called to the scene
after a person has complained of having been assaulted. The
complainant has visible injuries which she accuses another person of
infliction. The other person admits that there was an altercation,
but denies the assault.

What do you consider to be a "common sense" approach: (a) arrest the
person accused on suspicion of assault and see whether there is
evidence to support a conviction? (b) always believe the complainant?
(c) always believe the accused? (d) Believe whoever is the older
person?
