Talk to the local Age Concern Office. There are ways but which, if any,
will be best will depend on circumstances.

It is far, far more complicated than simply keeping the dosh from HMG.
Sheltered housing may be an interim step into residential then nursing
home. That needs money. As does giving her choice over which home she
ends up in.

It may be that the grandchildren only get a fraction of the value of the
house, but at least she will not be totally reliant on the tender
mercies of the State.

Is putting on a Granny Annexe to your property or you moving to a
property where a Granny Annexe could be added, a possibility? That can
be a good way of keeping both her and her dosh out of Council hands.
