I think almost anybody can make a claim Peter. However if the claim
fails the estate pays usually. In this case, and I must restate for
the benefit of the OP IANAL, if the lady is claiming on the basis it
maybe cheaper to pay her off she is playing a dangerous game. If she
is claiming a share of the "pot" then her house could well end up in
the "pot".
