In what way(s) does the BBC provide value for money to society as
a whole? In news providing, certainly - but what proportion of the
license fee goes on that? What else?

It could be argued that some of the crappier output is actually
detrimental to society, rotting minds and morals perhaps, but as
I don't watch TV I'm in no position to comment on this.
