It will depend very much on the details, and may need legal advice/challenge
to resolve. In principle the school can't decline to pay you for work that
you will do from this point forwards without your agreement unless there is
an explicit clause in your contract which allows it.

I suggest you seek advice. If you are a member of a union (NUT etc) then in
the first instance seek help from them - it's what you pay your subs for. If
you aren't then you could discuss it with either the CAB or (probably
better) ACAS - ACAS can be found in the phone book and their advice is free.

If the situation really is as you describe then I would suggest you had
reasonable grounds for believing the money to be genuinely yours, and that
means that if you've already spent it the school can't claw it back. The
school would have to absorb the overspend and hopefully learn from the
experience. They then may ask you to allow them to claw it back as a
goodwill gesture because if you don't they'll have to axe some other
activity (they'll probably focus on something emotive like "Integration
exercises for special needs kids" or "remedial reading assistance") to make
you feel guilty. If this happens then refuse point blank - this is not YOUR
problem because it was not YOUR mistake. If they even suggest that they
would have to tell everyone that these activities were axed because you
wouldn't pay the money back then this is harrasment in the workplace, and
should be reported through the appropriate channels (it's a serious
desciplinary and in some cases criminal offense).
