My experience has been rather different. The aged desk person has just
taken details on a big form and then sent me away again - with the item.
With the instructions that, if I didn't hear from them in a few weeks,
it was all mine to dispose of as I wished. I've never heard anything
further.

I assume that many people losing anything valuable just don't bother
asking if it has been handed in.

I'm more surprised that people don't at least tape their phone number
onto expensive stuff.
