I found this, which says it is 2 months, and then 1 month to reclaim
the item.

The item must then belong 100% to the finder because otherwise the
police authority will auction the goods, so if you bought it, it must
be 100% yours to keep.

What law is it that stops the original owner having a claim to the
item?

I also found that the London Underground also keep goods for 3 months
then auction them here

So the law not only applies to police authorities but also public
bodies like London Transport and local authorities? How about private
companies like Tesco? Are they allowed to sell off lost property?
