But the media have often used phrases such as "new ripper" or "return
of the ripper" etc., as such sensationalist phrases help to sell
newspapers. The Peter Sutcliffe myth also sells newspapers and has
prompted a rash of documentaries exploiting the lie that Peter
Sutcliffe is the Yorkshire Ripper. Arguably, if they trumpeted the
truth that the Yorkshire Ripper was never caught, that would sell
newspapers even better, but then it would also risk a libel action
from Ronald Gregory, who was Chief Constable at the time of the phoney
press conference that launched the Peter Sutcliffe myth.
After Ronald Gregory dies, the floodgates will open with regard to
publicity about the Yorkshire Ripper cover up.

Re Steve Wright, for what it's worth, a tv documentary titled "The
Suffolk Strangler" will be shown on 'Crime' channel (uk Sky
satellite / Virgin cable tv) next Thursday 15 May at 8pm. I don't know
if this has already been aired on channels 1 to 5.
