IIUC, the police prefer to come and collect at a time to suit
themselves.(eg giving the offender a nice weekend in the cells before
anything is done)

However, if the local station is any guide - you will find it locked if
you just go there on spec. Repeated attempts will eventually get you
through the door, to be greeted by some wizened geriatric who will take
the details and leave you there whilst they "try an find someone". To
eventually return and ask if you can come back tomorrow, as they are a
bit busy at the moment.

It will be the CPS that determine the charge. So it could be almost
anything. IIRC, dropping a crisp resulted in a charge of unlicenced
dumping of hazardous waste. So, expect the unexpected - eg Trade
Description Act (mandatory labelling requirements) - Illegally
presenting mutton as lamb. or maybe the Factory Act - Unlawful operation
of hazardous equipment without adequate safety guards.

The punishment is a different matter. It is normal to allow for time
already served, so, after 14 years, a slap on the wrist should do. With
or without the French maid outfit..
