The one I nearly always get is only slightly less fantastic: "Ah yes,
I'm afraid it's just missed this month's cheque run. Don't worry, it'll
go in the queue for next month's." One of these days I am going to ask,
What cheque run? Why can't you just get a chequebook and write me the
cheque and post it?
