Jordan's criminal court has convicted and sentenced a
23-year-old student to 10 years in jail for shooting and stabbing his
sister to death to cleanse the family's honor.
The court says the defendant told interrogators that he stabbed his
sister 14 times and shot her repeatedly in October 2006 after her
ex-husband complained that she had affairs.
The court initially sentenced the defendant to death, but commuted the
sentence to 10 years in jail to give him the chance to repent.
The harsh sentence Tuesday underlines Jordan's determination to curb
so-called honor killings in this tribal-dominated society. Killers had
previously received sentences as short as six months.

Baroda, May 13: In yet another case of honour killing, a
retired Army jawan has allegedly axed his 20-year-old daughter to
death for marrying against his wishes.
Dhairvirsinh Bhedoriya was unhappy over the marriage of his daughter
Vandana six months ago to a man of her choice. He had fixed her
marriage with some body else.
The incident occurred in the jawan’s house in GIDC area of Makarpura
in the outskirt of the city on Monday, the police said.
Bhadoriya telephoned Vandana to come to his house in GIDC area to
collect a cheque. When Vandana reached her father’s house, Bhadoriya
tried to kill her by firing three rounds from a revolver.
When a youth staying in the locality came to her rescue, Bhadoriya
took Vandana inside the house and allegedly killed her with an axe.
The youth alleged that Vandana’s mother and sister also helped
Bhadoniya in killing her.
