Bollocks. In a profession which has to command the trust and respect of the
public he's been caught a) breaking the law, and b) lying to avoid
detection. If any other member of the public had been in that situation you
can be sure they would have got a stiffer sentence because of (b).
IMHO policeman found guilty of an offence should be treated to the maximum
penalty for that offence automatically. Dismissal should be automatic too.
Any any colleague found helping them to evade the law should also be
dismissed.
Erosion of faith in the police is a nasty cancer which leads to more
criminals getting away with it, as fewer people want anything to do with the
police, witnesses dry up, vigilantism becomes endemic, and all society
suffers.
