I disagree with the other answer, I have heard of cases where people
have been turned away and their GCs cancelled. You seem to have acted
in good faith (i.e. spplied for the permit) and also had a valid
reason to be temporarily away (I assume you intend to come back to
live US)

You should consult with a competent attorney.

I only used my GC to come back once (3 day trip), so I do not know the
normal drill - but they send me to secondary inspection and there were
other GC holders there as well. It seems they may be getting tougher,
so I would not risk it without talking to attorney. If you do risk it,
at least bring evidence of filign for permit, ties to US (bank
accounts, tax returns, etc.), evidence that stay was temporary, etc.

Good luck
