I asked my lawyer that question 2 years ago, it is perfectly legal, I
did it no issues. You can then file for GC based on marriage if you
want to (I waited for work one instead). It is even legal to marry now
because your visa is expiring, or because you are afraid of being
fired as long as you have a true relationship with the other person
and you did not get married just to stay here, but if you otherwise
would have gotten married and changed the date to stay together that
is fine
