I can't answer for the original poster, but from what I hear, generally
consulates cannot give you more information. Primarily, because they don't
have the information - the case sits on some desk in the FBI office in
Washington D.C. Plus, even if they did have information, they wouldn't be
allowed to tell you. After all, the whole (alleged) point of this exercise
is to catch terrorists, and that's not something where you would want
information to leak out.
That said, the FBI did publish some information on their Web site a little
while ago, indicating, IIRC, that 97% of cases were completed within four
months.
