As far as lawyers go, I actually had my share of bad experiences, too -
that's how I got started researching things on my own. There are some
very, very good lawyers out there, as well as some that just aren't.

That is how I view the position of this newsgroup: it provides you with
the information to understand the process, identify good professionals in
the field, and properly supervise them. One of the primary complaints from
lawyers is that their clients are so uneducated about the law that they
don't even know what questions to ask, or what information the lawyer
needs.

That said, citizenship applications are among the type of application
where most lawyers tell you that you are better off doing it yourself, and
just paying the lawyer for a one-hour consultation to double-check the
forms and identify any possible pitfalls.

When my time comes (I'm eligible a year from now yesterday!) I will do
exactly that.
