Subject: J1 to F1 Posted on: Sun, 22 Aug 2004 03:01:30 +0000

Hi folks,

I'm originally from Germany and currently in the US on a J1 visa. I am
doing an internship for a travel operator in California. My J1 visa will
expire on September 15th, which means in addition of my 30 travel days I
will have to leave the US on October 14th at the latest.

However, I will enroll at City College of San Francisco next week. The
college will then issue an I-20 with which I can apply for a F1 visa.
Unfortunately my courses won't start before January 2005. Thus between
September 15th and January 1st I couldn't remain in the US, because I
wouldn't have legal status during these three months.

I have friends of my family in the US who would provide room and board
for me during these three months. Also, my girl-friend (she's not Ameri-
can) lives and studies here, too, and I don't wanna leave her back for
three months in case I have to go back to Germany to apply for my F1 vi-
sa from there.

Is it possible to apply for a kind of a bridging visa? Can I legally st-
ay here once I applied for my F1 visa at INS? Or is it even possible to
leave the country for one day and re-enter the US on a visitor visa? Wo-
uld that interfere with my F1 visa application?

Thanks for your help.
