Müüriku (Marienhof) manor was situated at the distance of 1 kilometer from
Väike-Maarja, on the road to Simuna. It was founded in the 19th century by a
merchant from Tallinn, called P. J. Hoffmann. He bought a tenant farm and
opened a shop. There was no competition and he became rich in no time at all.
Proper manor houses were built, including a long wooden main building that
has been preserved up to our time, also a small building for officials that
traverses the main building. In a building situated behind, the former Väike-
Maarja school for girls was opened in 1902. In the building for officials
there was the first hospital in Väike-Maarja with four beds at the end of the
19th century and one of the offspring of the Hoffmanns was a doctor. The
manor itself was sold already in 1891 to an Estonian called Jaan Allik who
had become wealthy running a tavern.
