Hi,

I have been on the F1 status for more than 5 years. I recently
received an OPT (optional practical training/EAD)

I was wondering whether I need to pay the SSN and medicare tax when I
an on OPT?


I have read some contradictory information on this elsewhere. Some of
of the forms mentioned that if you are on F1 status for more than 5
years (which I am), then you need to pay the tax. However, at a few
places I also read that I can file some kind of petition and request
the IRS to exempt me from the tax. Also, I am not sure of the rules
for OPT are different.

I will greatly appreciate any clarification on this matter. Thank You.
