I did my own digging and asked a few people. The answer seems to be:
a) You cannot re-enter the US on an expired visa in our situation,
even from Canada (if my wife was resuming work under the J1 it might
be different). The grace period is for leaving, full stop, end of
story.
b) Re-entering under the VWP should be no problem, but take proof of
the flights with you |
