In principle, that is possible.
In practice, you may get some additional questions at the port of entry.
Basically, they want to make sure that you leave the US, and don't try to stay
and work in the J1 job. The visa waiver doesn't allow changing status, but some
people may try that, anyway, so they basically want to make sure that the person
is aware of the issues.
Also, the visa waiver absolutely requires that you have a return ticket.
