I understood the rule to be that during the required 3 years of residence
for a spouse or 5 years for non-spouse an applicant must have been present
on US soil for more than 50% of the relevant period. Absences of more than
6 month but less than 12 months are permitted without disrupting continuity
of residence if the applicant can prove that they did not abandon residence
during those absences.
